Today marks the 70th Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese military propelling the United States into war. In this one attack more than 3,500 Americans were killed or wounded. President Franklin D. Roosevelt called this "a date which will live in infamy."

A couple of years ago, I had the privilege of visiting Pearl Harbor with my beautiful wife. The smooth, still waters created in me an emotional tidal wave. My soul longed for peace and a world in which bad things did not occur. I am so thankful for those men and women who have served our great country.

As we are in the Advent Season we are reminded by Paul in Ephesians 2:14, that Jesus "himself" is our peace. May you enjoy the deep, still, waters of the peace of God in your life this Advent Season.

Your Passionate Pastor,

Heath

The Chest of Joash

In the last verse of 2 Kings chapter 11, we are introduced to a young boy named Joash, who at the age of 7 is appointed king. We know very little about this young king. His legacy, he was a king who tried to do what was right. He rejects idol worship and encourages the focus of worshipping the one true and living God. By all standards that is a life well lived.

This young king takes it a step further and begins to repair the Temple. For years the Temple had not received much attention as it had become useless in a society that had turned its focus on worshipping other gods. Jehoash begins an emphasis to renew the Temple and worshipping the one true God by starting a fundraising campaign. Why start with money? Because the heart chases after money. Where ever the pocketbook goes so goes the heart's worship.

He wisely begins the corporate giving with the priests and the Temple leaders. As with any new emphasis, if the leadership is not willing to fully participate then the success of the initiative is short lived. Jehoash then does something unique he asks the people to give according to how "each man's heart prompts him to bring to the house of the Lord." All of the Temple's needs were met and all repairs were made. Verse 8 is an amazing verse as it describes how that all of the Temple leaders agreed that they "should not take any more money from the people" because everything had been completed.

As we look at this time of the year, finances are tight for everyone and most companies. If the Lord so prompts you, would you be willing to give a special gift this year to the church. The dollar amount will not be the same for everyone, but the generosity of each Christ-follower can be. Please mark on your envelopes Christmas Offering or Global Impact so that we know that this is above your regular giving.

During the Christmas season we will be receiving our offerings at the end of the service in a slightly different manor. There will be chest at the front of the auditorium that has a hole in it, representing the Chest of Jehoash in 2 Kings. You may place your offering in the chest before service starts, after service is over, or you may wish to make it a part of the worship service during the invitation time. We are thankful for the all that God has done through the Oaks in 2010 and we are looking forward to how God will work in 2011.

<div style="font-family: Helvetica; Knowing this, I would like to take the time to communicate to you where we are at financially, as a church. The end of the year is coming and it is our goal to end this year in the black. I know there are many expenses for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, yet this is the perfect time to consider giving a special gift to the church.

This time last year we were running a month behind on all of our bills. The first six months of 2010 we had great offerings and were able to get all of our bills current. Praise God! However, since August we have consistently received lower offerings. In fact, this past Sunday we had an offering of only $7,000. This is half of a typical week! We are having to make radical adjustments in paying our bills. Meaning that we are choosing which bills get paid and which ones have to wait.

As has been communicated in the Church Quarterly Conference, the Finance Committee and Staff are managing our expenses to the best of their ability. Listen to some of the comments, "Coke is a street-by-street campaign." "There is nowhere in Africa that we don't go." says CEO Muthar Kent. He continues, "Being in a country is very easy, you can go and set up a depot in every capital city. That's not what we're about. We go to every town, every village, every community, every township."

As I read this article, I could not help but ask if the church, God's people, those who enjoy God's grace are filled with this much passion to share the Good News. Do I have this much passion to reorganize everything in order to accomplish the goal of getting the Gospel into the hands and hearts of every person on the earth.

Thank you Coke for a hard hitting gut check.

Your Passionate Pastor,

Heath

Missions

Is missions a program or a lifestyle?

For many churches missions is just a program. It is what we do. We give money on specially selected Sundays throughout the year. We see a video that tugs on our heart and we give a little money. We hang banners on the wall of the church and that is as far as it goes.

What if missions became what it was intended to be, a lifestyle? Missional living is when we see everything that we do, that we are involved in, and those we come in contact with as an opportunity to reveal the living God. As a Christ-follower missions becomes more than just a program but it becomes the very way in which we live our lives. We desire to be on mission with God. In other words, to be involved in God's mission.

Which direction do you lean? Our answer most definitely is, "yes!" As a great poet once wrote, "To err is human, to forgive is divine." As you go through life there will be failures, it is just part of life. The question becomes, "how do you look at failure?" Here are just a few thoughts about failure:

1) Failure is not fatal. It might seem like the world will end because of a bad decision. The truth is, most of the time it is not fatal, although it can be embarrassing.

2) Failure is not irreversible. Remember God is a gracious God and when you come depending on Him is willing gives out an abundance of grace.

3) Failure is not a destination. Failures can come in a moment and then they pass. It is our responsibility to make sure our journey does not stay in failure by the choices we make.

4) Failure is not the enemy. Through each failure there are lessons to learn. Be willing to discover what God desires to teach us in the moment.

In 1985 Coca-Cola launched a new product the "New Coke" in order to compete with its twenty-year market loss to Pepsi. Maybe you remember trying this new drink. Do you remember the taste? In 79 days Coca-Cola lost about $100 million. People could not stand the "New Coke." With this enormous failure Coca-Cola brought back Coca-Cola Classic. The results from this enormous failure--the copy begin growing once again.

I see you on the other side of failure.

Your Passionate Pastor,

Heath

Temptation

Don't you get tired of it? When the kids are doing well in school? When your marriage relationship is fun, light, and intimate? When you have a job? When God is blessing you?

In our contemporary mindset we are radically self-centered. The way in which we have been taught to love each other is based on how we feel and what we get out of the relationship. If my needs, hopes, dreams, desires, and happiness is fulfilled then we feel loved. In order to love someone we are to meet there needs and make much of them. Bottom line, we feel loved when we are being made much of. When events do not center on us or cause us pain then we automatically assume that we are no longer loved.

The problem is that we apply this to definition of love to God. When we expect God to demonstrate His love to us by making much of us we have missed the point of the Gospel. The Gospel is not about us getting all things we desire, it is about so much more. God in is infinite wisdom and love, can use the good and the bad, to bring us to a greater vision of who He is. That then allows us during mountain top or dark valley experiences to be able to make much of God because He is revealing His love.

I pray that you will be able to make much out of God today. Can I just say how refreshing it was to have a few moments in which I was able to interact with a group of people in an authentic way. On Thursday morning a friend/accountability partner in the church called and asked how I was doing spiritually. At first I struggled to tell him what was going on in my life and then after prayer it came rushing out. As we talked, he encouraged "poured courage" back into my life.

Church if you are not experiencing authentic relationships you are truly missing out of the "good stuff." The Christian life was not meant to be lived alone. Yet, if you are like me, you find yourself tired, worn out, and not willing to put yourself on the line. Doing this causes us to miss out authentic community. Find a place that you feel comfortable, Sunday morning Bible Studies, Home Groups, Ladies Studies, or Men's Studies and get plugged in. I meet several others this past week who said this is what they were looking for as well. You are not alone. There is a place for you to enjoy the refreshing authentic friendship inside of the church.

Your Passionate Pastor,

Heath

THANK YOU!

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 120th Anniversary. I know I have. Especially when you have been praying and seeking God for answers to life's questions. When your faith has been truly large as you expected God to show up and yet it seems that He missed the deadline. When the plans that you had laid out so succinctly fail to come to pass because God did not come through with the part you assigned to Him. It can be crushing to your faith when God is silent and the pain is so great. Maybe the sickness that you have earnestly prayed for relief continues to grow more intense. This week I was reminded of a beautiful quote by an author of the past and I would like to share it with you today. C.S. Lewis wrote, "God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks to us in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: It is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world."

My dear brother/sister, lean hard into Christ today and you will find, "He is all you need."

Your Passionate Pastor,

The blessings keep rolling!

Last Sunday afternoon over 40 people showed up to rack rocks. What a blessing! Thank you to all those who showed up to rack. If you have never racked rocks you just haven't lived. In 3 1/2 hours we racked the entire field. I have to admit that when we started, it seemed doubtful that we would be able to cover the entire fields in one afternoon, but we did.

God provided through the generosity of a local company the Hydro Mulch, 70 pounds of grass seed, the employee time, and 300 feet of pipe for the irrigation were all donated. GO GOD! I just love watching God show up. The Hydro Mulch has been sprayed on and now we are watering. Please pray that grass grows quickly.

God this past week allowed me to interact with Dr. Bill Skaar of First Baptist Grand Prairie and we are working on a partnership between our churches. They will partner with us for Football and Soccer and we can partner with them for basketball. This partnership has already begun several conversations with other churches in the area as well. GO GOD! When God's people begin to pray and ask God to bless and we begin trying new things it is fun to see how God does what we could not imagine.

Have a great week!

Your Passionate Pastor,

Race for their Souls

he statistics tells us that 80% of all who trust Jesus as their personal Savior do so before the age of 18. That is exactly what God has been doing here at the Oaks. Last week at pre-teen camp 3 of our students trusted in Jesus! This week so far we have had 5 trust in Jesus! GO GOD!!!!!

What a joy it is to be a part of God moving and working in such an incredible way. Although camps, VBS, and other efforts require energy, money, and time it is worth it! Lives are changed for all of eternity. Everyone who prayed, participated, invited, or worked has played a part in the salvations this week. This is why we do what we do.

I am thankful for a church that is willing to invest in the next generation with time, energies, and money. Excitement is growing as another opportunity to impact the next generation (18 and under) is becoming a reality. If you haven't notice the corner of the property is being cleared and the ground is being leveled as we prepare for the Upward Football and Cheerleading season. Registrations are coming in and adults not tied to the church asking if they can help. Please be in prayer that God will use Upward to touch hundreds of kids and families.

We are looking for a few more people who would be willing to invest financially in this cause. We even have sicknesses and the swing flu or commonly known as (H1 N1) tagged with numbers and letters. Texting has only heightened the use of letters to communicate meaning. See if you can identify what some of these net and text lingo symbols mean: 2b@, *$, 4ever, cul?. These simple codes do have meaning. You can find the answers at the end of this article.

So by now I am sure you are wondering what E1 C1 N1 means. I am glad you asked. The combination of three letters and numbers is a reminder for what each of us should be doing this year (Each One, Connect One, In One). As a Christ-follower we are called to be a bridge that connects people to our wonderful God. A bridge's purpose is simple to connect two separate and disconnected pieces of land allowing for passage. Our calling is to build relational bridges to those who are unchurched, de-churched, and dead-churched. This happens in our community, at our schools, at our jobs, at our exercise facility, and in our neighborhood.

So here is the challenge Each Christ-follower, Connect one person to Christ and His Church, In one year. That is twelve months to be praying for and asking God to allow you to be the bridge to connect someone to Him. Will you take the challenge?

*The answers are (2b@) to be at, (*$) Starbucks Coffee, (4ever) forever, (?) How are you doing? How would you rate your spiritual growth during this season of you life? On a scale 1 to 10, 10 being white-hot on fire for God and 1 being brutally-cold and indifferent to God, where are you? We cannot always be white-hot, I wish this were not so, but it is the truth. Our spiritual lives go through seasons just like the year, times of growth and times of dormant life. If you find your self in a dormant life cycle, I pray that it will bother you and create and desire to white-hot again. Here is a Top 10 List, in honor of this being 2010, for things you can do to grow spiritually.

Ton Ten Ways to Grow Spiritually

1. Commit your life to Jesus Christ. It is the most important and best decision you will ever make.

2. Get baptized. This is the first expression of your inward commitment to faith in Jesus.

3. Gather regularly with believers. The weekend services are designed to encourage and build your faith.

4. Connect to other believers in authentic community through a Life Group. This can be in a Home Group during the week or in an Adult Bible class on Sunday.

5. Plug in your spiritual gifts to a local church. You are never more like Jesus than when you are serving others because of Him.

6. Start praying for a family member/friend who is unconnected to a church or God. Look for ways to invest in him/her personally.

7. Read the Scriptures. Spend a set amount of time each day just reading books of the Bible. Start in Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Ephesians, Phillipians, or James.

8. Set a time each day to spend in prayer. "We are too busy to pray, so we are too busy to have power." R.A.Torrey

9. Give generously God kingdom work. Willingly follow the promptings of the Spirit of God when it comes to your finances realizing that you are a steward.

10. Set aside some time to enjoy the presence of God. This looks different for each person (nature, music, quiet, journaling, etc.)

God Bless on your faith journey. If you would like to talk with someone or need help with one of these areas please contact the church office.

Your Passionate Pastor,

Chapters Closing

May is a time of the year when things are wrapping up and chapters are coming to an end. Have you ever wondered why it is called Good Friday. It seems as though it is an oxymoron. This is the day that marks the death of Jesus Christ. Why is that good? A more appropriate term might be Sad Friday; however, it might be a little harder to celebrate.

This is the day that the disciples were hiding for fear of their lives. The crowds have mocked Jesus. The religious institutions of the day have are completely out of step with the God they claim to serve. So, why call this day good?

As a Christian, although hideous acts of violence were committed against Jesus, we can call this day good for at least a couple of reasons. First, it is the day that God took all of our sin and placed it on Jesus. That includes all sin, no matter how hideous and wicked, opening the invitation of salvation for anyone. Second, it is the day that Jesus paid the sin debt of the entire world and it has been marked "paid it in full." Humans cannot do enough good works to pay off this debt. The sad news is that we all owe this debt. The good news is that Jesus has "paid it in full."

Easter Sunday marks the day that Jesus rose from the grave proving that events of Good Friday had fully been accepted and that He has power over Satan, sin, death, and hell. Wow! Thank you to every one who has given to help us begin painting and decorating our church building. Thank you to the Building Decorating Team who have worked so hard to figure out color schemes and prioritize each project. Thank you the numerous people who have worked this week to get paint on the walls.

Painting and decorating the building is a huge undertaking. The pay off will be worth it. As people walk into the church they are greeted by a warm and friendly environment. ESV

This verse is always intensely convicting. Our schedules are jammed packed with appointments, agendas, meetings, fast foods orders, and just every day life. This next week keep track of what happens throughout the day and ask yourself this question, "Is this keeping first things first?" If it is not then ask, "how can I make this more redemptive in purpose?" Lastly, look for ways to create margin in your life. Margin is simply space in your schedule. It will not automatically happen. You will have to work for it, but it will be worth it. In these few moments reflect on Matt. 6:33 and ask for God to help you keep Him first. It will be exciting to watch how the Holy Spirit speaks to your soul helping you to keep first things first.

I Am Blessed!

One of my favorite responses to a greeting of "How are you?" is, "I am blessed." It always brings a smile to my face as I am reminded of how truly blessed we are.

The answer is great because as a Christ-follower my circumstances and experiences do not determine my joy. My joy is not centered on things but on the blessings that I have been given because I am "in" with God. I did not have to earn this blessing God chooses to freely give it to me based on Jesus Christ did on the cross. If you would like to review some of the blessings we get to enjoy check out what Paul writes in the first chapter of Ephesians.

Report of Student Pastor Search

Many of you parents of teenagers are wondering how the search for a new Student Pastor is going. Jesus loved the church and gave his life for it. Why should we do anything less?

This month we have been talking about the church and describing what it is. The church is part of the big narrative of God that started with time. God choses to call out a people and to use them in brining His redemptive work to the world who is looking on. Israel was his chosen people in the Old Testament and now in the New Testament the Church is the primary reconciling instrument in the world.

Last week we talked about the obligations of the church leaders to the local body. One very important point to remember is that God has called everyone in service and leadership to be men and women of character, good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit, and to shepherd well. Acts 6 the first deacons' primary job was food distribution and the leadership standard was set high. It is our goal to have our leadership leading as God has prescribe in His Word.

This Sunday we will be talking about the obligations of Christians to their local church body. I believe that it will be encouraging to hear how God has designed the church and the life of the church to enhance, enrich, and enable you to live the Christian life abundantly.

10 Ways to Read Your Bible

Here is your first Top 10. What a blessing! We have such a great group of students. Parents, thank you for encouraging your children to be a part of the student ministry. I know The Oaks places a high value on students and you are willing to help in various ways. Here are few ways in which you can pray for our students.

Pray as we are searching for a new Student Pastor. Ask specifically that we will find someone quick and the transition will be fast.

Pray that our students will stay engaged throughout this process. It is hard when they have lost their trusted leader.

Pray that this process will refine the faith of our students instead of hindering their faith.

Pray that the teens will receive the new Student Pastor well.

Life Groups

What are Life Groups? Life Groups are simply put a smaller environment in which you can connect in authentic relationship and belong in a community as you discover God's truth together.

Not everyone likes or needs the same environment. So that is why we have created several types of Life Groups.

Sunday Morning Studies: These occur on Sunday at the church before or after the morning services.

Home Groups: Occur in the comfort of a home during the week and at different times and places.

Growth Groups: A variety of specialized studies for further growth including ladies, men, finances, recovery, in-depth studies, and others.

This Sunday if you are looking for a Life Group to be a part of we will be displaying all Life Groups in Luper Hall at 6pm. This environment will be highly relational allowing you to find the group, leader, and material that best suites you. The only thing that we ask is that you experience what it is like to do life together with other Believers!

Christians are Lonely?

Did you know the Christian life was never meant to be lived alone? God created Adam and then said it is not good man is alone so he created a helper, a counter part. To say that a Christian is lonely is truly a sad statement, because once a person accepted Christ they have been brought into the family of God! They now have a family filled with brothers and sisters covering the entire globe.

When we find ourselves hurting, lonely, down and out it is this new family-God's Family, that should be our source of encouragement. If you are missing out on this part of the Christian life I want to encourage you to check out one of our many Life Groups. This is the perfect place for you to find a place to CONNECT in authentic relationships and BELONG with other Christians.

White Snow

I am sitting in my office looking out the window on Christmas Eve watching a spectacular event. So I figure we should mirror what is happening in heaven.

God has brought 2 children, 1 teenager, a couple in their 30's, and a couple in their 50's to salvation. They usually continue with, "shouldn't we take care of 'Jerusalem' first?"
The first part of the premise is right. God has called us to this city, this moment in history, this area, and this people. I do believe that we as a church will be held responsible for how we incarnationally live out the gospel in our jobs, homes, schools, and area. We have talked about how that we have the hope of the world and God has called us to be on mission with Him giving that hope away.

While we are to take care of our Jerusalem, God has called us to bring the Gospel to the world. We cannot do this alone. That is why we partner with other churches and mission agencies to take this blessed hope around the world.

I believe that God is calling us to be "both and" in our mission approach. We should be bringing the Gospel to both Jerusalem and other parts of the world at the same time. While we cannot be on multiple places at the same time we can give so that we are making a difference in multiple places.

Give this Christmas Away

I get jazzed when it is time to talk about missions. I love it. No matter how it looks (local, global, across the street, around the world) I love missions!

This month we are focusing on Giving this Christmas away. Our kids did a fantastic job with their program talking about how we can give this Christmas away.

There are numerous ways that you can Give this Christmas away. This year we took the family to the store and filled the shopping cart up with shoes to give to "Shoes for Orphans." My kids loved it. They got to grab the shoes and when we kept putting more in the cart they where shocked at first. Then excitement filled their hearts and they couldn't wait to get more.

When you give this Christmas away you will see "consumerism" break in your own life. It is so festive!

Thanksgiving is such a wonderful holiday. I am glad that it is low-key and kept simple. Something about being thankful without all of the glitz is nice. I am reminded of how that Paul tells us that in 1 Thess. 5:18 that we are to "give thanks in all circumstances" because this is the will of God.

During this time of the year I make it a point to stop and slow down for a moment so that I can be thankful. I write out things that over the past year God has blessed me with. This is always a precious time in my life. Needless to say my worship is greatly enriched.

I find it comical every time I sit down for this exercise that I start off so slow. Isn't it amazing how comfortable we get with all of the blessings God gives us? Let's set aside time over the next few weeks to praise God for all that he has done in our lives.

Preaching to Preachers

On Thursday I could use your prayers. I have been invited to speak to the North Texas Baptist Pastor's meeting. What a huge honor and I am thankful for the opportunity. However, preaching to preachers can be both rewarding and intimidating at the same time.

I enjoy the idea of being a blessing to those who are in the trenches making things happen. Please be in prayer with me as I speak on Thursday morning. This stat bothers me. He goes on to say that most people don't go because they have never been invited. Again a kick in the gut.

I mentioned this and over the last few days I have received reports of several in the class challenging the quote.

One of our precious elderly deacons asked a woman in line a the check-out, "where do you go to church?" Her response was, "no where." He then invited to come to our church. Her response, "It has been years since I last went to church and I can't remember the last time someone ask me to go."

Others are finding similar responses. Worship is always a passionate topic for people. It conjures up deep emotional movements, which can be good or bad.

I do not know what your experience of worship and church has been in the past. American churches over the last few years have been wrecked by worship wars. This is not uncommon! The first brothers on earth fought over worship because one was accepted and one was not.

The challenge for us here at the Oaks is to make sure that we do not allow a worship war to destroy the movement of God. I will be tenacious about making sure that we do not fight over non-important worship issues. As a church, would you join me by making the same commitment that worship wars will not happen here?

Executive Pastor

I have been having several people ask about when we are going to fill Phil and Wayne's positions. Chris and Morgan have faithfully served our church as the youth pastor and we are going to greatly miss them.

I have said it before, and it bears repeating again. Chris and Morgan have a giant servant's heart. They are huge asset to our church. We know that God has great things in store for them at First Baptist Allen.

This Sunday we are honoring them with a "Build Your Own Burrito" and a "Baby Shower" after the second service. It takes numerous people willing to give of their time to pull an event off like this. Thank you to those who helped financially as well. Each donation helped us provide the event for FREE to our community. Thank you to those who served to make sure that each station, registration, and food distribution had a smiling personal touch. Thank you to those who passed out the 15,000+ flyers to the schools and other locations.

You know we did something right when I-20 begins to back up as a result of traffic slowing down to see what was happening on our property. We had 1,360 kids registered! That number does not include all of the parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and volunteers.

We are currently following up with each registration. At the Pastor's Exchange we will be in a small an intimate setting in which I will be able to talk about the church, who we are, how we are going to function, and even address hard issues. I believe it is important for us to talk about many of these topics but each topic would not be appropriate for a Sunday morning conversation. So we have created a forum in which I can discuss these topics that will play out in our church in a setting that allows for interaction from you. Yes, you heard it right. This forum allows for you to be able to exchange information with me and discuss each topic.

The room will only for about 50 people to be involved the Exchange. Every one is rushing around trying to find that one school supply that you forgot. Getting the kids to practice for the sport that they had to sign up for. Evenings are full with making sure that everyone gets something to eat, homework is completed, and in bed on time.

Just a reminder. Your Heavenly Father is waiting to visit with you. Make sure that you don't just slow down but that you stop and listen to Him. This requires that everything is turned off. Pause. It was an one hour exhibition of the wonderful and incredibly talented musicians here at our church. I am amazed at all of the people who have musical talent, mostly because I have zero talent in this area. I even struggle clapping on beat, which I discovered there is actually a correct and incorrect beat to clap on.

In one hour we heard choir music, orchestra, soloist and many different combinations. All generations where present and my kids loved eating hotdogs, chips, and drinking a coke while listening to music. Thank you to all of those who participated. Last night was a HIT! The majority of those in attendance where begging to do this once a month. I don't know if the musicians could handle it but we sure did enjoy it.

Where do I fit?

Over the last few days people have been calling and asking, "Where do I fit?" I love it. People are signing up, calling it, and e-mailing trying to find their perfect fit.

This can only be attributed to God moving amongst us. God is moving and I am so grateful to everyone who is listening to what God is saying in their lives. It can be scary to step out and say that you are willing to do something that you have never done before. It can make you a little nervous to say that you are willing to help. You are not for sure if you are signing your life away.

It is completely natural to feel that you might be committing to something you will not like and enjoy doing. The goal is not for you to feel "stuck," but energized. If you are doing things you like to do then it will cause you to want to do it.

Go ahead. Step out. Try something new. The core of a person's beliefs. There are two kinds of values: espoused and enveloped.

It is easy to have espoused values because they are written down and even talked about but no action is required. Many people, churches, and organizations have gone through lengthy processes to write out well documented value statements. This process usually includes many long drawn out meetings with numerous people involved. Finally, a small group decides that only a certain few will be the values. While the document usually is professionally developed and presented in a high quality color, the values are rarely lived out. Just saying that you have a value doesn't mean that is how you live and function.

Enveloped values are the values that determine how you think and make decisions. These values form the basis for how a person, church, or organization acts. Every aspect of live is influenced by the enveloped values. The goal of a value is to form the boundary by which we live. It is hard to fully embrace a value because it requires constant reminding, learning, and growth in that area so that a habit is formed.

Over the next few weeks we will be looking at the values of The OC and describing how we wish to function. Each value sets the culture that we hope will envelop every aspect of live here at The OC. I hope this series encourages you as we set out to be the church God has called us to be.

Small Group Leaders

Yesterday, I talked about laying the foundation for Small Groups. Today, I am specifically talking to those who are passionate about Small Groups. Maybe even you have lead one before. In January we are starting Small Groups off campus during the week.

John Maxwell states, "Everything rises and falls on leadership." That is why we are taking this fall semester to adequately prepare, equip, and develop those who will be leading a small group. To lead a small group requires a person to be willing to serve others. It does take time, but it is so worth the investment. How many people have you discipled, invested in, or mentored in the last year? two years? five years? This is a perfect opportunity to truly pour your life into some else.

We are now taking applications to be Small Group Leaders. You were designed to do life with others. We are naturally drawn to people in similar life-stage groups. Here at The OC we value being authentic relationships that sharpen us in our Christian walk and deepen our understanding of Scriptures.

Currently our structure provides opportunities for you to engage in the lives of others through our Sunday morning class times: 8, 9, and 10;30am. Our facilities limit the number of groups that can meet on Sunday mornings and we have creatively tried to expand in every way we can. We even have some groups who meet in the halls! I am so glad we have this problem instead of too many rooms and not enough people!

We believe that every Christ-Follower should be involved in a smaller group where he/she can grow, be held accountable, and just do life together. Our goal is to create additional venues for people to be in community. As our worship attendance continues to climb we have no more room for additional groups on Sunday am. This Fall we are beginning the foundation for Small Groups off-campus during the week. Our goal is to fully launch Small Groups off-campus in January 2010. More information will be coming soon.

4 Baptized and 3 More Accept Christ!

Sunday morning was a God-filled morning. I could say nothing else but GO GOD! What a great day! In between the two worship gatherings we had a baptismal gathering. Everyone gathered around as we heard how the Spirit moved in each person drawing them to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. It never gets old. I am blown away by the grace of God reaching out to man offering forgiveness of sin, freedom from sin, and a new life with Christ. WOW! So undeserving.

To put the cherry on top of the ice-cream sunday, at the end of the second gathering 3 more accepted Christ. I had the opportunity to pray with one young man- how sweet it is! As you can tell I am excited about the movement of God. He is doing great things and I can't wait to come back for more.

Fall Events

Fall is just around the corner. Our youth pastor was officially ordained as a minister. While he has been licensed, he is now ordained. People often wonder what is the difference between the two and there is a simple explanation. Licensing is something done by a church through the state. Because we are to live by and respect the laws of the government that is currently over us we gladly license ministers.

In an ordination we typically find a more meaningful ceremony in which a young man makes known his desire to follow God in vocational ministry. After period of time when others have been able to observe the character, competency, and spiritual gifts of a particular young man then an Ordination Counsel is formed. This counsel has first hand knowledge and experience with the candidate that validates his call into ministry. After a time of formal questioning there is a special public ceremony. During this time there is a charge to the candidate by a seasoned minister. One of the most special times of the event is the laying on of hands. This is a time when ordained ministers come by and place their hands on the candidate and pray over him, his future ministry, and his family. Others are also invited to participate in praying over the candidate. At the end, the candidate is recognized as a minister of the Gospel with the backing of the Ordaining Council and the authority of the local church.

Needless to say last night was a great time of encouragement for Chris and Morgan as God has called them to an incredible life of ministry.

Anniversary

Saturday of this week (Aug. 8th) is my anniversary with Jami. We are celebrating our 11th year as a married couple. Wow! How time flies! It seems so quick. I remember dating and even those first few years of marriage. It was time when everything was an adventure. Living in a one room efficiency while going to college seemed perfect. There were dreams of what the future held and would be like. We where living on love and how fun it was.

This got me thinking about life and what truly how short life is. James says that life is like a vapor that appears for a little time and then it vanishes away. What a sobering thought! I began to wonder am I accomplishing what God has called me to accomplish. Another question haunts me, "Am I being a good steward of my time and opportunities?"

Time is moving on. Whether you have a birthday, anniversary, or just another day, let's make it count for eternity.

Men's Ministry

Should the church focus on different groups and target markets? This is a question that many are answering and debating with in the church world. The problem can occur when a church has too many competing ministries and programs that they are no longer able to do the church. Programs can drive the church instead of the mission of the church.

The Men's Ministry is an area that we are revitalizing and even overhauling completely. For years The Oaks has had a vibrant Ladies Ministry. Kudos to our ladies for all of the ministry and intense Bible studies that you have been doing. Men we don't want to be left behind.

In the Bible, God has called men to be the spiritual leaders of their homes. The problem is that many man feel inferior to their wives spiritually and really don't understand how this should play out. Other men because of a lack examples of what godly men should be are confused how to truly live out what God has called them to be.

Our goal is to start a Men's Ministry that will allow the different generations of men to interact giving younger men older examples and older men purpose. Over the next few years we are going to initiate ongoing deep Bible Studies, conferences, weekend- retreats, and ministry opportunities. We are not trying to create one more thing that you have to do. But something that truly adds value to you and your family. Because of what Christ has done for us, we should have the best marriages, fathers, grandfathers, and leaders around.

A Pot-LUCK"Y" Meal

Last night I had the privilege of eating with the SOS group. What a blast! I ate so much it hurt. Honestly, I had a meeting after the meal and I was uncomfortable for the first few minutes of the meeting. If you have never come to a pot-luck then you are not lucky. The spread was vast as anything you could desire to eat was available. My biggest problem was trying to determine what to eat and what not to eat. Instead of choosing what not to eat I just ate some of everything.

While the food is great, the fellowship time is the real blessing. It seems as though setting around a table and eating together allows something supernatural to happen. In the midst of relationships we can't help but experience the Holy Spirit invade our lives. Being in middle of eating with the SOS truly made me feel lucky to be a part of The Oaks.

Solid Oaks Seniors

The Solid Oaks Seniors is a life stage group of people who are retired and enjoy life. He has done a great job of making sure that the SOS group was cared for and loved.

That has not change. The Oaks cares for and loves all of those who would find themselves in this life stage. It is our firm belief that every life stage group is important to the church. One age group does not have a higher significance than the other.

It is the goal of the Leadership Council and myself to make sure that the SOS continues to be a vital and growing ministry of The Oaks. This past Sunday I personally met with several SOS members who are interested in making sure this ministry continues. In the next couple of weeks we will be setting a date to plan calendar events for September through December. If you are interested in being a part please send me and e-mail heath@discovertheoaks.com and I will make sure you get the communications on the upcoming meeting.

It is Okay NOT to be Okay

The Gatherings of Christ-followers sometimes can become a place where we are comfortable pretending. A typical American "church" routine is to dress nice, express polite but short conversations, listen to a well designed music, and then enjoy a pleasant talk. I along with countless other Christ-followers dream of a gathering with a much different approach.

Dream with me just for a minute. Can you imagine a gathering of passionate Christ-followers who are aware of the fact that they are not coming to "church" but they are the church. They realize that if the "church" feels shallow and fake then it is because they the people are not interacting correctly.

Imagine a gathering that is so authentic that we scream out with loud voices that you do not have to be perfect to join with us in worship. Imagine this gathering filled with people who are okay sharing their heartaches and soul cravings. Imagine a place that judgment is not passed on someone for not having it all together.

Imagine a gathering where people realize that we need each other. In deep authentic relationships where we can be honest and raw with our junk, God invades and allows us to find restoration. In Galatians 6, Paul speaks of restoration and caring each other's burden.

That is the type of "church" I want to be a part of. A community of believers who gather in the name of Christ with the goal of worship and restoration of the human soul. A church where we see the gospel lived out in how we interact with each other.

Two comments to leave you with today. First, it is okay not to be okay. Second, we love you enough to come alongside you so that you are restored in a community of grace to Jesus Christ.

The Leadership Council

The Leadership Council has been meeting. Yeah! God truly has put together a great team of men and woman! Many of you have been asking if the LC is doing anything yet. We are! In July the church voted on the final three members of the LC and we have begun the organization process.

Please be patient with us as we begin to analyze and decipher where we are at as a church. Many are wanting fast changes while others are screaming for no changes. We are meeting together weekly at this time in order to begin the process of making The Oaks what God has called His "bride" to be- THE HOPE OF THE WORLD.

Just so you know we have voted in officers for the LC and they are: Heath Marion Chairman, Ken Byrd Co-Chairman, Wayne Lee Secretary, Jerry Bosher Prayer Leader. The other LC members are Ron Harris, Darrell Mangum, Teri Caldwell.

I hope this is an encouragement to you to know that we are moving into action. It is always good to take the opportunity to say thank you.

Top of the TO-DO List.

It is that time of year. Change is in the air. This is the year to make those dreams come true. This is the year to make that diet work. This is the year to accomplish what you have not done yet. I don't know what you are thinking about changing but I am sure you have something.

Here is just a reminder about something extremely important to put on your to do list for 2010. Read your Bible. Let me give just a few quick pointers to help you be successful this year.

1) Set a specific time each day. Habits are created by repetition.

2) Set an attainable amount to read. If you have never read then start with a few minutes each day. You can always go over.

3) Get a reading guide to help give you a system. For example, Thru the Bible in a year reading programs.

4) Start with something easy to understand. Genesis, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Proverbs, Psalms,

5) Remember you are not just trying to check off something on your To-Do List but that you are doing this with the anticipation that God is going to speak to you.

Have fun. Let's hear your stories or pointers.
